History and general information

The Department of Fundamental Sciences was established in 1991 with the opening of Turkistan University, initially named the Department of Normal and Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery. The first head of the department was Associate Professor B.Sh. Tusipbekova, Ph.D. In its early stages, the department included notable faculty members such as Associate Professor E.R. Sakimbaev, Ph.D., and Professor A.R. Rakishev, M.D., who was invited from the Almaty Medical Institute. Faculty members without academic degrees also played a crucial role in student education. Later, a course on histology was added to the department's program.
In the 1997-1998 academic year, Associate Professor E.R. Sakimbaev, Ph.D., became the head of the department, during which time the department actively expanded its academic and research activities. In the 2001-2002 academic year, the department was renamed the Department of Human Morphology, with Associate Professor S.A. Azhaev, Ph.D., appointed as the head.
In the 2003-2004 academic year, the department incorporated courses on General and Social Hygiene, and Professor Bazarbek Kerimbekovich Kerimbekov, M.D., was appointed head. In 2004, courses in normal physiology, medical biology, and genetics were added to the department, leading to its renaming as the Department of Human Anatomy and Physiology. During this period, Associate Professor K.M. Khasenova served as the head.
In the 2009-2010 academic year, the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, as well as Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery, were merged into the department. It was renamed once again to the Department of Human Morphology, with Professor S. Jumashov, M.D., appointed as the head.
In the 2014-2015 academic year, Associate Professor B.K. Junisov, Ph.D., was appointed head of the department, followed by Associate Professor B.S. Begaliev, M.D., who led the department from 2015 to 2018. In subsequent years, Professor K.K. Baitursynov, Ph.D., took over leadership.
From September 2020 to October 2021, the department was led by Ph.D. S.A. Tukhtibaeva. In the 2021-2022 academic year, Associate Professor M.I. Omaraliev, Ph.D., became the head, and from 2022 to 2024, the department was headed by M.B. Junisova, Ph.D.
In 2024, the medical faculty departments were reorganized, and a new Department of Fundamental Sciences was established, incorporating disciplines such as Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Histology, Embryology, Medical Biology and Genetics, Medical Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Medical Pathology. As of September 1, 2024, the department is led by Ph.D., Associate Professor (Acting) F.N. Sarzhanov.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, the department comprises 21 faculty members, including 2 professors and 5 Ph.D. holders, 10 senior lecturers, and 4 instructors without academic degrees. Forty percent of the faculty members hold advanced degrees, ensuring a high standard of education and research activities.
