History and General Information

History of the Department of Criminal Law

The Department of Criminal Law was established on September 26, 2025-2026 by the decision of the Senate of the International Kazakh-Turkish University named after Khoja Ahmet Yasawi. This department was organized at the Faculty of Law of the university in order to train specialists in the field of criminal law and conduct scientific research.

The main goal of the department is to train lawyers who have deep knowledge and skills in the field of criminal law, who are able to know the basic principles and norms of jurisprudence and apply them in law enforcement agencies. The curriculum of the department is aimed at in-depth training of students in the theory and practice of criminal law, the foundations of criminal legal liability, criminal procedure, and criminal punishment measures.

Structure and scientific staff of the department

The teaching staff of the Department of Criminal Law for the 2025-2026 academic year includes 11 staff units, including 2 candidates of science, 6 PhDs, 10 senior lecturers, and 1 lecturer. Since 23.10.2025, the head of the department has been appointed as a senior lecturer PhD, Nurmukhambet Aigul Umirzakkyzy.

The department focuses on the development of theoretical and practical skills in all aspects of criminal law.  At the same time, students get acquainted with such important topics as criminal procedure, elements of criminal legal liability, and steps of the criminal process.

Research work

The Department of Criminal Law is not only engaged in education, but also actively engaged in research work. The scientific activity of the department is aimed at studying topical issues of criminal law, analyzing legislative reforms in the field of law enforcement, and improving methods of combating crime.

The faculty of the department works closely with law enforcement agencies, preparing and publishing educational, methodological and scientific works on modern legal issues.

The history and structure of the Department of Criminal Law are aimed at improving the quality of education at the University's Law Faculty and training highly qualified specialists in the field of law. The department provides students with the opportunity to master the theoretical foundations of criminal law and apply them in practice.
