History and General Information

The Department of Surgical Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine at Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University is one of the university’s structural academic units responsible for training highly qualified, competitive, and professionally competent surgeons in accordance with the university’s strategic development policy. The Department carries out its activities by integrating education, scientific research, and clinical practice.

History of the Department’s Establishment

The Department was established in 1993 at the Kentau City Central Hospital. Its establishment laid the foundation for the development of medical personnel training in the region and the formation of an educational system closely integrated with clinical practice.

During the Department’s initial development period, priority was given to developing educational and methodological materials, systematizing curricula for clinical disciplines, establishing the material and technical infrastructure, and forming the academic teaching staff.

From 1993 to 1995, the Department was headed by M.M. Akhmetov, Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor. Under his leadership, the Department’s organizational structure was established, and efforts were made to integrate the educational process with clinical practice. Developing methodological foundations for teaching surgical disciplines became one of the Department’s key areas of activity.

From 1995 to 1997, the Department was headed by K. Karimbayev, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Professor at IKTU. During this period, particular attention was paid to strengthening students’ practical training, improving the professional skills of interns and young specialists, and expanding the scope of scientific research topics.

From 1997 to 2003, the Department was headed by A.B. Bolgayev, Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor. During this period, priority was given to developing the Department’s research capacity, incorporating diagnostic and therapeutic technologies in surgery into the educational process, and participating in national and international scientific and practical conferences.

Structural Changes and Stages of Development

In 2004, in accordance with Resolution No. 1 of the University Senate, the Department underwent structural reorganization. As a result, the Department of Surgical Diseases was divided into two independent departments, one of which was named the Department of Faculty Surgery. During the reorganization, I.S. Moldaliyev, Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor, and B.K. Zhunisov, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Associate Professor, contributed to organizational, scientific, and methodological activities. These changes were aimed at clarifying course content and improving clinical training.

From 2003 to 2006, the Department was headed by K. Karimbayev, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Professor at IKTU. During this period, educational programs were aligned with state compulsory education standards, and educational and methodological materials were updated.

From 2006 to 2008, the Department was headed by M.I. Omaraliyev, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Associate Professor. Under his leadership, attention was given to developing research activities and encouraging young academic staff to participate in scientific work.

From 2008 to 2015, the Department was headed by Sh.M. Seydinov, Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor. During this period, efforts focused on expanding international scientific cooperation, participating in joint research projects, and promoting students’ academic mobility. Strengthening cooperation with clinical training facilities to improve students’ practical preparation was also a priority.

From 2015 to 2017, the Department was headed by M.E. Seisenbayeva, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Senior Lecturer. During this period, the Department addressed the integration of innovative pedagogical technologies into teaching, the use of interactive teaching methods, and improvements in the organization and quality of students’ independent work.

From 2017 to 2019, the Department was headed by M.S. Zhunusov, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Associate Professor. The Department focused on developing scientific publications, publishing research findings in international scientific journals, and incorporating simulation-based learning into the teaching of clinical disciplines.

From 2019 to 2020, the Department was headed by I.Zh. Turmetov, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Senior Lecturer.

Current Period

Since 2020, the Department has been headed by Murat Saginaliyevich Zhunusov, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Associate Professor. Currently, the Department’s activities focus on improving the quality of education, increasing the effectiveness of scientific research, strengthening links with clinical practice, and developing the professional capacity of its academic staff.

The Department’s main areas of activity include teaching surgical disciplines, improving educational and methodological work, participating in scientific projects, publishing research articles, promoting academic mobility, and expanding international scientific cooperation. Particular attention is also paid to the professional development of staff, students’ participation in scientific research, and the application of modern teaching methods.

The Department’s scientific and professional activities are reflected in research projects, publications, conferences, intellectual property outputs, and academic collaborations. These activities contribute to the development of the Department’s educational and scientific work and support the implementation of the university’s strategic objectives.

Throughout its history, the Department has undergone stages of organizational development, structural change, and improvement in educational and scientific activities. Today, its primary goal is to train highly competent surgeons by integrating modern medical knowledge with clinical practice.
