History and general information

The Department of Surgical Diseases was established in 1993 on the basis of the Kentau City Central Hospital in Turkestan Region. As one of the first clinical departments of the Faculty of Medicine, it laid the foundation for the training of surgical personnel in the region.

The department’s development consists of several stages:

1993–1995 – Formation Stage

The first head of the department was Prof. M.M. Akhmetov, MD, DSc.
During this period, educational programs were developed, the first clinical sessions were organized, and the material and technical base of the department was established.

1995–2003 – Institutional Development and Staff Strengthening

• Prof. K. Karimbaev, PhD (1995–1997; 2003–2006)
• Prof. A.B. Bolgaev, MD, DSc (1997–2003)

These years were marked by the improvement of surgical disciplines and the introduction of new methods for clinical training.

2004 – Structural Reform

According to Senate Decision №1, the department was reorganized and renamed “Faculty Surgery.”
Prof. I.S. Moldaliev, MD, and Assoc. Prof. B.K. Junisov, PhD, played an important role in this restructuring.

2006–2015 – Strengthening Scientific Potential

• Assoc. Prof. M.I. Omaraliyev, PhD (2006–2008)
• Prof. Sh.M. Seidinov, MD, DSc (2008–2015)

This period was characterized by expanded research activities, stronger international cooperation and modernized clinical facilities.

Since 2015 – Renewal and Digital Transformation

• From 2015 to 2020 the department was led by M.E. Seisenbayeva, M.S. Zhunussov, and I.Zh. Turmetov.
• Since 2020 the head of the department is Assoc. Prof. Murat Saginaliyevich Zhunusov, PhD.

Currently, the department focuses on modernizing educational programs, digitalization, integration with simulation centers, and alignment with international medical standards.

Scientific Achievements

Since its establishment:
7 Candidate (PhD-equivalent) dissertations
2 Doctoral dissertations
6 Master’s theses have been defended.

Faculty Achievements

The academic staff:
• holds international, national and regional awards,
• has completed foreign academic internships,
• consists of highly experienced clinicians.

To train highly qualified, ethical and professionally responsible surgeons in demand at regional and international levels, based on the best achievements of surgical science and clinical practice.

IV. Strategic Goals

  1. Modernization of surgical education programs in accordance with international standards.
  2. Implementation of simulation, laparoscopic and endoscopic training methods.
  3. Development of innovative projects in surgery, 3D medicine, and telemedicine.
  4. Increasing publication output in Web of Science and Scopus.
  5. Developing academic mobility and dual-degree programs with foreign universities.
  6. Enhancing integration with clinical bases and improving practical training.
  7. Continuous professional development of faculty (CME, CPD).

V. Core Tasks

• Organizing high-quality educational processes in general surgery, emergency surgery, visceral surgery, traumatology and vascular surgery.
• Developing students' clinical reasoning skills.
• Teaching practical skills for diagnosing and treating emergency and elective surgical conditions.
• Conducting research projects and supervising student scientific work.
• Providing diagnostic, consulting and therapeutic clinical services.
• Implementing evidence-based medicine principles.
• Strengthening cooperation with university clinical departments and regional medical organizations.
