"Botanical Garden" is an educational-scientific, industrial, cultural educational institution. The purpose of scientific and industrial work is to collect assortments of decorative and fruit plants, preserve their gene pool, research their technology, grow and prepare seedlings of local weather-resistant species. "Botanical Garden" serves as a demonstration to introduce the collection of decorative and fruit trees to students of colleges and schools and the city population.
"Botanical Garden" combines science and industry by employing teaching professors, students, and graduate students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
"Botanical Garden" operates based on the Laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Science, international agreements and conventions on environmental protection approved by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and regulatory requirements for conducting scientific and industrial work.
Our services: The city is very greedy for landscaped plants, besides, with its habitual and other morphological features, it is unable to fulfill aesthetic requirements, improve sanitary and hygienic conditions, and create an environment that creates a comfortable environment for people. That is why it is of great socio-ecological importance to produce scientifically based species of other regional plants brought for introduction to arid conditions and to form an effective technology of cultivation.
The greenhouse of the botanical garden was commissioned in 2012, and flowers were grown. Since 2018, seedlings have been grown using the method of rapid growth of decorative plants.
Our duties: The construction of a botanical garden in the city of Turkestan had two goals: to create a scientific introduction center for studying the assortment of decorative and fruit plants in the subarid region of South Kazakhstan, to establish an educational and production base for biology, ecology, and geography specialists of the second university.
No. 428-Z of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 29.09.1993. In order to solve this problem, a new Botanical Garden was created in the ancient city of Turkestan with an area of 88 ha as part of the International Kazakh-Turkish University.
The establishment of the botanical garden began in 1994. Today, the collection fund of the botanical garden includes 150 species and varieties of decorative and fruit plants, introduced here for the first time, brought from other regions, belonging to 59 genera and 28 genera.
The city of Turkestan and the region of Turkestan belong to the emergency continental climate, which is adversely affected by the Aral-Syrdarya disaster zone.
In the last 50 years, the average annual temperature has increased by +1°С, and the amount of annual precipitation has decreased by 28 mm. There are 225 days of drought in a year. From the month of March to the middle of November, the amount of evaporation increased from the amount of precipitation, and the entire upper layer of the earth dried up. The dusty wind lasts for several months. In summer, the air temperature reaches 40-50 С, dry hot wind - "harsh", in winter - cold wind - "black cold", all this is inconvenient not only for visitors, but also for local residents. As a result, valuable species of local flora and fruit trees are in danger of complete extinction.
Research Institute of Botanical Garden
The Research Institute of Botanical Garden of Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University is a modern scientific, educational, production, and outreach center.
The Botanical Garden was established in 1994 in Turkistan on an area of 88 hectares under the Resolution No. 428-Z of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated September 29, 1993. Its primary purpose was to create a scientific center for the introduction and study of ornamental and fruit plants adapted to the sub-arid conditions of Southern Kazakhstan and to provide a practical training base for students of biology, ecology, and geography.
Today, the institute maintains a collection of approximately 150 species and cultivars of ornamental and fruit plants. The garden includes introduced species belonging to 59 genera and 28 families. In total, more than 127 species and cultivars of trees, shrubs, flowers, and fruit crops are represented within the Botanical Garden.
The institute’s key activities include the conservation of plant genetic resources, protection of rare and endangered species, development of propagation technologies for ornamental and fruit plants, research on drought-resistant species, and production of high-quality planting material for landscaping purposes.
Since 2024, the institute has operated a fruit processing and drying facility where environmentally friendly products are produced from apricots, apples, pears, plums, and other fruits using innovative processing technologies. The institute also utilizes equipment for recycling pruning residues from fruit orchards into wood chips.
Between 2021 and 2025, several research projects were implemented, focusing on accelerated propagation of ornamental plants, conservation of valuable genetic resources, micropropagation of fruit trees, and development of innovative technologies for tulip cultivation.
The institute serves as a practical training and research base for students majoring in biology, ecology, chemistry, and geography, while also conducting educational and outreach activities for schoolchildren and the general public.
The mission of the institute is to conserve biodiversity, protect the genetic resources of rare plant species, and strengthen the harmonious relationship between nature and society through scientific research.
Its strategic vision is to become a leading research center for the study, conservation, introduction, and sustainable use of plants adapted to arid environments and to contribute to the ecological sustainability of the Turkistan region.
