Climate and Art: A Foreign Artist Conducted a Masterclass

At our university, a special event titled “Climate and Art: Artistic Reality and a Global Issue” was held within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action. The event was organized by the Research Center for Sustainable Development (RCSD) and the Faculty of Arts. The gathering featured a specially invited guest, German conceptual artist, lecturer, and professor Nadine Fescht, who shared her creative experience. Professor Fescht emphasized that climate change is not only a scientific or environmental issue, but also a social phenomenon that can be expressed through art. She explained with examples how art can influence people’s thoughts and emotions, and contribute to increasing society’s environmental responsibility.

During the event, students and faculty members received valuable insights into global environmental challenges and became acquainted with modern conceptual art techniques. They also participated in a masterclass aimed at developing creative thinking skills. This meeting inspired young artists and designers to express their ideas freely and to show care for nature through creativity.

At the end of the event, participants noted the significant potential of art in addressing climate change and emphasized that such exchanges of experience contribute to advancing research and cultural initiatives in sustainable development at our university.

Together, they planted tree saplings at the Alumni Alley, setting an example of environmental stewardship. At the opening ceremony, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Mukhittin Shimşek was the first to speak, emphasizing the importance of environmental initiatives being implemented in the country. “On the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the ‘Clean Kazakhstan’ campaign has been launched.”

“This is a very important initiative — greening and tree planting activities are being carried out across the entire country. We are also contributing to this noble cause and doing our best. In fact, every tree you plant here today is the result of your effort, your creation. May these young saplings you plant today grow into green trees that will provide you with shade in the future,” he said.

During the event, the university administration and students jointly planted tree saplings. It is worth noting that the saplings planted on the university grounds are 2–3-year-old trees specially cultivated in our botanical garden. The selected species are well adapted to the climate of Turkistan and are expected to make a significant contribution to greening the campus in the future.
