SCIENTIFIC PANEL ON THE ISLAMIC AND SPIRITUAL HERITAGE OF THE GOLDEN HORDE HELD
The Eurasian Research Institute of Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University hosted a scientific panel entitled "The Islamic and Spiritual Heritage of the Golden Horde." The event brought together scholars to discuss the spread of Islam during the Golden Horde period and its influence on state governance, legal culture, educational traditions, and public consciousness.
The panel aimed to examine the spiritual and intellectual developments of the Golden Horde from a contemporary academic perspective and to propose new scholarly interpretations based on medieval written sources. Leading experts in history, Oriental studies, Islamic studies, source criticism, manuscript studies, and cultural studies participated in the event.
The discussion was moderated by Suat Beylur, Director of the Eurasian Research Institute and Associate Professor, PhD. In his opening remarks, he emphasized that studying the legacy of the Golden Horde extends beyond understanding a historical era, highlighting its importance for exploring the spiritual continuity, cultural ties, and civilizational development of the Turkic peoples.
Among the keynote speakers was Torali Kydyr, Director of the Institute of Islamic Studies under the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, and Associate Professor. His presentation focused on the role of Islam during the Golden Horde period and its contribution to shaping the region's spiritual landscape. He also discussed how the establishment of Islam as a state ideology fostered cultural and scholarly development throughout the region.
The panel also featured presentations by Mendigul Nogaibayeva, Candidate of Historical Sciences and Associate Professor at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University; Kanat Oskenbay, Candidate of Historical Sciences and Director of the ABDI Humanities Research Institute; Nurlan Atygayev, Candidate of Historical Sciences and Professor at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University; Ykhtiyar Paltore, Senior Research Fellow, PhD, and Associate Professor at the Eurasian Research Institute; Marys Kadylbek, Research Fellow at the Chokan Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology; and Kairat Kaipolla, Research Fellow at the Eurasian Research Institute. The speakers presented the findings of their recent studies and offered new interpretations based on historical sources.
During the discussions, participants explored a wide range of topics, including the manuscript heritage of the Golden Horde, Islamic educational traditions, legal culture, literary heritage, and the interaction among Arab, Persian, and Turkic civilizations. Particular attention was given to manuscript sources that demonstrate the development of education and scholarship, the formation of intellectual traditions, and the role of Islamic values in the evolution of state and public institutions.
The panel also addressed new methodological approaches to the study of the Golden Horde, the reassessment of historical sources, and opportunities for international academic cooperation. Participants emphasized the importance of further research into the intellectual history of medieval Eurasia and highlighted the need to expand scholarly collaboration in this field.
In conclusion, the participants identified key priorities for future research on the Islamic and spiritual heritage of the Golden Horde and stressed the importance of reexamining this historical and cultural legacy through modern academic approaches. They also noted that scientific forums of this kind contribute to strengthening national historical consciousness, promoting the rich heritage of Turkic-Islamic civilization, and advancing comprehensive research on the history of the Golden Horde in Kazakhstan.
