During the second week of the Winter School, the modules dedicated to the field of science began their work. Today’s meeting was devoted to the topic “Publication Strategy and Journal Selection Techniques.”

The moderator of the event was Vice-Rector for Science and Strategic Development Ainash Oshibayeva.

Opening the event, Rector’s Representative Naci Genc stated:
“Dear colleagues, I congratulate you on the opening of the second week of the Winter School dedicated to science! Holding such a significant project that provides up-to-date information related to the scientific field has become a yearly tradition. Similar events are only just beginning to be introduced at universities around the world. I would like to express my gratitude to all the organizers.

At our university, the development of scientific projects has a significant impact on the institution’s economy and scientific potential. In recent years, the research projects of our scholars have reached high achievements. Let us use meetings like this to share knowledge with one another and exchange experience. I wish you all success!”

Vice-Rector Ainash Oshibayeva noted:

“The main goal of Science Week held within the framework of the Winter School project is to increase the scientific activity of university researchers and to expand the visibility of their research results. Another important objective is to increase citation indicators of publications. As a result, methodological and practical support is provided to improve researchers’ Hirsch index (h-index). In addition, the project aims to discuss issues of research ethics and, through the analysis of scientific project development methodologies, to enhance the research competencies of faculty members and research staff.”

The main speaker of the meeting, Rector’s Representative Naci Genc, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the topic “Citations as an Indicator of Scientific Impact.”

The speaker elaborated on the evaluation of scientific works, the role of citations in shaping a researcher’s reputation, and the importance of international scientometric indicators.

Naci Genc focused on the key factors that directly influence the visibility of a scientific article. In particular, he emphasized that the article title, abstract, and keywords are the main elements that affect discoverability in international databases and the likelihood of receiving citations.

He also explained the significance of leading scientific databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, as well as indicators used to assess journal quality, including Impact Factor and SJR, and the meaning of H-index, G-index, and i10-index.

After that, Alibek Ydyrys, Professor and Researcher at the Botanical Garden Research Institute, delivered a presentation on “Journal Selection and Manuscript Preparation, and the Process of Submitting an Article to a Journal.” He explained the key principles of the scientific publishing process, highlighted the importance of scientific publications in shaping a researcher’s academic reputation, and provided detailed information on the quartile system of journals indexed in international databases (Scopus, Web of Science), the concept of Impact Factor, and the specifics of journal quality assessment.

In addition, he drew attention to the risks encountered when selecting journals and explained the characteristics of predatory and hijacked journals. The speaker also outlined the differences between Open Access and Closed Access journals and presented a clear algorithm for selecting a journal that best matches the research topic.
