SCIENTIFIC SEMINAR ON THE TOPIC “THE DICTIONARY AS A GUARDIAN OF PRICELESS CULTURAL HERITAGE”

The Faculty of Philology hosted a scientific seminar titled “The Dictionary as a Guardian of Priceless Cultural Heritage” with the participation of Professor Kenan Koç from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University – the author of Turkish-Kazakh and Kazakh-Turkish dictionaries. The event brought together faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduates.
The purpose of the seminar was to highlight the scientific, theoretical, and practical significance of dictionary compilation, as well as to provide a deeper understanding of the cultural and spiritual connections between the Kazakh and Turkish languages. In addition, the seminar aimed to spark the interest of young researchers and students in lexicography and to guide them in conducting research in this field.
During the seminar, the participants discussed in detail the scientific and theoretical foundations of dictionary-making, the mutual influence between the Kazakh and Turkish languages, and the importance of dictionaries as cultural heritage. Kenan Koç shared his personal experience and emphasized that dictionaries are an invaluable treasure not only for language learners but also for the fields of science and education.
It was stressed that a dictionary is not merely a translation tool but also a cultural legacy that preserves the historical memory of a nation and the richness of its language.
The seminar also analyzed methods and lexicographic principles applied in the process of dictionary compilation. Within the framework of developing Kazakh–Turkish linguistic ties, the spiritual closeness of the two peoples was highlighted, illustrated through language, and shared translation experience. Participants were introduced to effective ways of using dictionaries to support learners of Kazakh and Turkish.
At the end of the event, participants exchanged opinions and took part in a Q&A session.
