An international training titled “Using Artificial Intelligence in Teaching English to STEM Students” was held at our university.

The event was conducted by Mr. Jeremy Tarbatton, an invited specialist under the English Language Specialist Program of the U.S. Department of State.

The professional development training was jointly organized by the Kazakhstan Association of Teachers of English (KazTEA) and the Department of International Relations, with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan.

The five-day training brought together more than 20 school teachers with English proficiency at B2–C1 level and around 30 university instructors.

The main goal of the program was to enhance the professional competencies of English language teachers, support the effective integration of artificial intelligence tools into the educational process, and promote modern teaching methodologies. It also aimed to strengthen educational cooperation between Kazakhstan and the United States.

On the first day, participants explored how AI can transform traditional teaching into an interactive and communicative learning environment designed for students in science and technical fields, moving beyond passive learning approaches.

The second day focused on critical thinking and CLIL methodology for English language teachers and lecturers. Participants learned how to use AI tools to develop students’ analytical skills while mastering STEM-related concepts.

The third day was dedicated to prompt engineering and adapting learning materials using artificial intelligence. Participants practiced modifying authentic STEM texts into accessible reading and speaking materials for learners of different proficiency levels.

On the fourth day, attendees explored AI-assisted language assessment and feedback systems. They learned to move beyond traditional assessment models by developing real-time diagnostic feedback and dynamic criteria to track language progress in STEM contexts.

The final day of the program concluded with discussions on the ethical aspects of using artificial intelligence in education. The session also featured Ms. Nurgul Zhanabayeva, Coordinator of English Language Programs at the U.S. Consulate General, who highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and the United States and presented ongoing joint initiatives.

Throughout the training, participants engaged in interactive sessions, practical tasks, and group discussions, gaining both international experience and actionable methodological solutions for their professional practice.

They explored modern AI tools, learned global best practices in integrating English teaching within STEM education, and developed skills in creating interactive and personalized learning materials.

Participants also received guidance from an international expert and developed leadership skills necessary to conduct similar trainings for colleagues in their respective regions.

In conclusion, Mr. Jeremy Tarbatton introduced participants to modern AI-based educational platforms and demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be integrated into lesson planning, material development, language skill enhancement, and assessment processes.

He also presented current trends in the development of AI in education and effective ways of incorporating it into teaching practices. The practice-oriented nature of the training allowed participants not only to gain knowledge but also to apply it in real educational contexts.

At the end of the training, all participants received certificates. Teachers and lecturers expressed their gratitude to Mr. Tarbatton and presented him with commemorative gifts.
